Napoli and Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has opened up about the terrifying head injury he suffered in November 2021 during a Serie A clash with Inter Milan, admitting he “could have lost his sight.”

The horror occurred at San Siro when Osimhen collided with Inter’s Milan Škriniar, resulting in multiple facial fractures. Surgeons performed emergency maxillofacial surgery, six titanium plates and 18 screws into his face and jaw. A Naples-based specialist, Dr Gianpaolo Tartaro, revealed that the orbital bone fractured “just in time,” possibly saving the striker’s eye.

Osimhen described enduring grueling pain, sleepless nights and being unable to eat or sleep. “That injury… was like a near-death injury… I have like 18 screws under my jaw,” he told Wazobia FM. Despite forecasts of a two-week sidelining, scans determined he needed three months away from the pitch.

Upon his return, the 24 year old striker donned a protective mask still worn today to safeguard his healing face. Osimhen believes it enhances his confidence, explaining it feels “really dangerous” to play without it.
